How tires should actually be stored

Tires are rubber, and rubber does not love heat, sunlight or damp. Stored badly, they dry out, crack, and pick up flat spots. A few rules keep them in good shape:

• Cool, dry and out of direct sunlight. UV breaks rubber down over time.
• Off concrete if possible. A bare slab can wick moisture and cold into the tire.
• Away from motors and chemicals. Ozone from a running furnace or generator ages rubber faster.
• Stored the right way for the type. Tires on rims are best hung or laid flat. Loose tires off rims do best standing upright.

A garage corner gets none of that. It is usually warm in summer, cold in winter, and the tires sit on the slab gathering grime. They survive, but they age faster than they need to.
