One is a quick wheel swap. The other means peeling tires off rims and balancing them. The price gap is real, and so is the fix.
One changeover costs $79. The other costs $159. Most people pay the higher price every season and never know why, or that there is a one-time fix. The whole difference comes down to one thing: whether your winter tires already live on their own set of rims.
On-rim means you have two complete sets of wheels. Your summer tires are mounted on one set of rims, your winters on another. Twice a year we just take off the wheels you are running and bolt on the other four. The tires never leave their rims.
That is fast, clean work. No machines peeling rubber, no rebalancing. It is $79 because it is four wheels off, four wheels on, torqued to spec.
Off-rim means you have one set of rims and two sets of loose tires. To switch seasons, we have to break each tire off its rim, mount the other tire on, and balance all four. That is real machine time and more of it.
That is why off-rim is $159. It is the same wheels going back on your car, but every tire gets dismounted, remounted and balanced first. More steps, more time, higher price. Every season.
You do not need to be a mechanic to figure out which you are. Go look at where your off-season tires are stored, in the garage, the shed, wherever.
Still not sure? That is fine. We confirm your setup on site before anything is charged, so you will never be billed off-rim work without us showing you first.
If you are an off-rim customer, you are paying $159 every single season. That adds up. There is a one-time fix: convert to your own second set of rims.
We get you a set of dedicated rims for your winter tires, a rim kit from $249 depending on wheel size. We mount and balance your winters onto them once. After that, you are an on-rim customer for good, and every future swap is $79.
Here is the math that makes it worth it:
After that the rims are yours. The savings just keep coming, season after season, for as long as you own the vehicle. A second set of rims also makes the swap faster and a little easier on the tires, since they are not being pried on and off every six months.
If you already run two sets of wheels, do nothing. You are on the cheap plan. If you are off-rim and you plan to keep the car a couple more winters, converting to a second set of rims almost always pays off. If you are about to sell the car this year, it is fine to ride out off-rim swaps.
Either way, we will tell you straight when we are out at your place. No pressure, no upsell. We confirm your setup on site before anything is charged.
